In an increasingly interconnected world, the joy of cinema often faces a language barrier. While the Indian audience's appetite for other regions' movies has grown, not all movies are dubbed in multiple languages.
This was a problem that Aditya Kashyap encountered in Paris when he could not watch "Mission Impossible" in a language he understood.
He realized this issue was not limited to international borders but was prevalent in India, too. He and his brother Vineet Kashyap started Cinedubs in 2020, an app allowing moviegoers to enjoy films in their preferred language, regardless of the language in which the movie is being screened.
The app allows users to download the soundtrack of a film in their chosen language before heading to the theatre.
Cinedubs uses unique in-house technology to sync the downloaded soundtrack with the movie playing on the screen, providing a seamless viewing experience in the language of the person's choice.
This enhances the movie-watching experience and brings a diverse range of films closer to people who might have missed out due to language barriers.
While the initial journey wasn't easy, the founders faced hurdles in introducing Cinedubs to the Indian film industry as they were having limited connections.
Today, the startup collaborates with numerous production houses in India and is in the final stages of discussions with Hollywood giants like Warner Bros and Universal Studios.
The app is free to use, but the startup plans to introduce a nominal subscription fee soon. It claims to have seen over 80,000 soundtracks downloaded by more than 35,000 users globally, with a significant majority from India.
Cinedubs aims to expand its user base to two million by FY24-25 and generate substantial revenue through subscriptions and advertising.
